Day of Remembrance for Nicholas Heyward, Jr.

Nicholas Naquan Heyward, Jr. was a 13-year-old honor student playing cops and robbers in a stairwell in Gowanus Houses when a housing police officer shot and killed him. The cop who killed him was exonerated by the District Attorney and never faced any charges. Please join Nicholas Jr.'s family and friends to mark his birthday in the park that was named in his memory. All are invited to this community gathering for food, basketball games, arts & crafts, face painting, live hip-hop and dance performances, voter registration, HaHa the Clown, exchanging toy guns for books, and more.

Date: NOW SCHEDULED FOR Saturday, September 17, 2011 (original August 27th date canceled due to cancellation of all permits by Mayor Bloomberg in anticipation of Hurricane Irene. The originally set September 27th candlelight vigil will now also be taking place at the 9/17 Day of Remembrance)
